mark for 1775-1781, a letter ‘L’ below a
crown and the initials N.M. below a
motif, 2 ½in (6.3cm) wide
Provenance: According to the vendor’s
family tradition the box was the
possession of a relative Thomas Young
whose initials appear on the cover.
Thomas Young joined the army in 1776
and rose to surgeon in 1780. He served
with distinction in the West Indies with
Abercrombie to become Inspector-General
in 1795. He was P.M.O. of the medical
forces in Egypt in 1801 and could well
have been in attendance when
Abercrombie died. He retired in 1802 and
died in Leith on the 13th January 1836. A
photograph of a family portrait of
Thomas Young is on display but not
included with the lot.
