cover reputedly used by the Covenanters at their Communion Service prior
to the Battle of Drumclog in 1679
£300-500
Provenance: This lot is being sold on the instructions of an
Australian resident lady. The cloth is accompanied with an excerpt which
reads ‘On Thursday the 29 of May 1679 a party of Covenanters rode into
Rutherglen, attached a copy of their
testimony to the Market-cross, burned the obnoxious Acts of Parliament
and extinguished the bonfires which had been kindled in honour of the
King’s birth-and-restoration day. Claverhouse
left Glasgow on Saturday night to make enquiries, and early next morning
he had four prisoners at Strathaven. Not
content with these, he thought he would make a little tour to see if he
‘could fall upon a conventicle’. He fell
upon one at Loudon Hill and the result was the encounter known as The
Battle of Drumclog…’.
The cloth was once owned by Mrs G. Candlish
of Edinburgh.
