Chinese and Japanese (and Indian) Works of Art Fly High at Glasgow Auction  All about the metal…

The Asian Works of Art Auction on Tuesday 17th November showcased some delights in metal – from silver to bronze and white metal in between, let’s look at some of these highlights.

The lovely Japanese silver and ivory shibayama casket, which graced the back cover of this month’s catalogue, brought much pre-auction attention. Bidders on the phone and online fought it out in bids, with the hammer going down at £1800 to an internet bidder from Italy. Ben fatto!
Moving to the Chinese contingent of the Auction and lot 267 was a Chinese silver three piece tea service. The detailing and relief motifs were just stunning and it well exceeded its estimate and expectations to fly away at £2000.
Sticking with tea services and we come to lot 308. Indian in origin this time and in white metal, its detailing was similarly striking, though much more elaborate and profuse that its Chinese counterpart – as one might expect. The elephant heads were a particular favourite, and it would seem not just of mine – bidders fought over it with the hammer falling at double lower estimate, £600.
Perhaps the biggest (littlest) surprise of the Auction came in the form of lot 370 – a small Chinese bronze censer. At only 6.5cm diameter, its nice mark to the base and elegant form are perhaps even more remarkable. It certainly caught the attention of bidders across the globe, and a bidding war between the saleroom, the phone and internet was sparked. Even online bidding from China couldn’t thwart the telephone bidder from Canada, and the hammer fell at £2000. A lovely end to the auction!

The next auction of Asian Works of Art takes place on 12th January 2016 and entries are currently invited. Please contact specialist Magda Ketterer for more information – magda@mctears.co.uk, or on 0141 810 2880.
