Chinese and Japanese art and antiques fly high at auction in Glasgow On Tuesday 17th February The Asian Works of Art Auction brought a few surprises along with the awaited triumphs.

To kick off with the surprises then, we come first to a large Chinese famille rose bowl (lot 317) which proved very popular over the view. The decoration was truly delightful and the presence of bats on the reverse helped this bowl soar above estimate to fetch £2200 to an online bidder from China. Towards the end of the auction came lot 489, a Chinese silk wall hanging. Catalogued (conservatively) as 19th century, it quickly became clear that this was a special piece of work. The use of mirrors over the embroidery suggested that this may be an earlier embroidery, and the detailing was simply exquisite. After fierce bidding in the room, online and on the phone the hammer finally fell at £2400. A highlight in ceramic came in the form of lot 261, a Chinese blue and white ginger jar which sold at £380. Probably a 19th century example it was a good size and the quality just shone through.

It is worth noting that the Japanese market showed strength over the auction. Lot 359 was a stunning Japanese ivory of a fisherman with geese. Despite losses and damages across the piece, the pre-auction interest was huge and on the day itself, the hammer fell at £1000 – a great result. After this, another Japanese ivory figure (lot 490) exceeded its estimate to fetch £320.

Performing solidly was Chinese furniture, with hardwood jardinière stands proving a popular purchase. Lot 349 in particular, with its unusual legs and shape, doubled its estimate to achieve £300 on the day. To end on an unusual note, lot 486 brought to the market a Fijian carved Tanoa ni vele, or cava bowl, and a Fijian war club and dish. The bowl was traditionally used for the ceremonial drink Cava or Kava, and it was a bidder in the saleroom who won the lot at £260.

The next Asian Works of Art auction is coming up on the 28th April. For further information or to consign to this auction, please email
