Chinese Art Flies High at Auction, McTear's, Glasgow  The Asian Works of Art Auction on Tuesday 28th April kicked off in style with a pair of Chinese Mandarin pattern lidded vases (lot 268). The pre-auction interest indicated that they would perform well on the day, but the interest in the saleroom, online and on the phone brought excellent competition, with the hammer falling at £3800.

Quick on the heels of these vases came lot 271, a Chinese bronze foe dog. Similarly the interest before the auction hinted at a good result, and the exciting bidding brought the hammer down at £3400.

In the cloisonné category, a pair of 19th century Chinese cloisonné vases (lot 262), brought bidding online and in the saleroom to fetch £360. The devil is in the detail with these striking vases.

Sticking with Chinese objets d'art, lot 301, a rock crystal Buddha outshone its estimate to get away at £460. An unusual figure in material, the Buddha is a lovely piece.

Jade was well represented. A red jade belt buckle, lot 348, was popular pre auction and its hammer price of £500 was a great result.

Chinese silver is always a sure thing at auction. Lot 392 brought twelve silver menu holders to the market and competition was so fierce, the hammer didn't fall until £550.

Similarly, Chinese furniture usually proves popular. An unusual and attractive folding hardwood chair of large proportions, lot 420, doubled its estimate to get away at £320.

Moving away from the Chinese for a moment, Indian silver performed well at the auction. Lot 264, a tea caddy, sold above estimate at £220, while lot 332, a three piece tea service, fetched a stunning £440. And a striking bowl with deities and animals in relief, brought £500, well above estimate.

The next Asian Works of Art Auction takes place at McTear's on 7th July and entires are currently invited. Please contact Magda Ketterer on 0141 810 2880 or email for more information.
