Chinoiserie Clock Steals The Show

Chinoiserie Clock Steals The Show Lot 766, a George III longcase Chinoiserie clock, was one of the most admired lots during the view of February’s Clocks, Scientific & Musical Instruments Auction, held 16th February.  Attracting interest from all who viewed, and from further afield via the internet, anticipation was rife that it might sell well. After a flurry of bids in the room and online the clock exceeded everyone’s expectations by realising a final hammer price of £2400.
The term Chinoiserie refers to the European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions and this clock was a fine example.

Lot 744, a George III repeating bracket clock made in Edinburgh, also sold strongly. There were strong bids in the room and online and the final hammer price was an impressive £1200.
