Sell musical instruments at McTear's Auctioneers, Glasgow! It is not often we see 19th century Spanish guitars, but this month we have a beautiful example. It is by the highly respected luthier Jose Benedid. Born in 1827 in Cadiz, he followed in his father’s, Josef Benedid Diaz, business, which was one of the most important makers in the Cadiz school. Josef was important for his early use of fan bracing.

Jose, eventually moved and worked in Cuba, whilst having a series of workshops in Cadiz. Jose died whilst living in Cuba in 1899.

This guitar has some charming inlays and rarely, displays a wonderful pair of labels. It is usual that these degrade and become illegible. Generally, this guitar is not faded by light and is in remarkable condition. Similar to violins, the older guitars tone will differ to modern guitars. As the wood seasons and the resins reduce over the years, the tone becomes richer and more lustrous. Violin and guitar players consequently place a premium on older instruments. This is before you consider the rarity of these guitars.

The guitar is lot 579 and is estimated £500 – 800. We will see if it makes a surprise price on auction day. Let's hope so!
