Rare and Valuable Gold Coins at Auction: McTear's Coins Department, Glasgow The Gold Demy Coin

Reigning in Scotland from 1390, it was under Robert III that Scotland saw the introduction of gold lions as well as half-lions which are often referred to as ‘demys.’ It is thought that the coins were only struck only in Edinburgh but during this period there were also mints at Aberdeen, Perth and Dumbarton. The coins typically weighed between 50 and 53 grains (a grain being equal to 64.79891 milligrams) which is approximately 3-4 grams.

In the Specialist Coins Auction on 10th December 2014 McTear's sold one of these very rare coins for £1200 hammer.

In the April 2015 Coins Auction on the 29th there is a very rare to auction collection of 17th century Scottish and English gold coins, catalogue online 21st April.
