Rare Scottish coins make record prices at McTear's! As predicted, the collection of rare Scottish gold coins in the dedicated auction on 29th April 2015 raced out the door with many far exceeding their estimates. The star of the night without a doubt was lot 1521 described as JAMES III OF SCOTLAND (r. 1460 - 1488) GOLD RIDER. With an estimate of £1000-2000 it wowed the room selling at £3200 to an online bidder. Lot 1510, JAMES VI OF SCOTLAND (r.1567 - 1625) GOLD 'THISTLE' NOBLE, was another great success selling at £2600, three times its lower estimate. Lot 1520 JAMES IV OF SCOTLAND (r.1488 - 1513) GOLD UNICORN made £2600 as well and it was lot 1515 JAMES VI OF SCOTLAND (r.1567 - 1625) GOLD SWORD AND SCEPTRE that made £1400, again three times its lower estimate.

Success was seen as well for the more usual fare of the specialist coins auction in the form of gold sovereigns. The average hammer achieved for these was around the £190-200 mark, a strong level given the fluctuations in gold prices of the last year.
