Arts and Crafts Jewellery at Auction: McTear's Specialists will Value for Free, Glasgow The Arts and Crafts movement of the later nineteenth and early twentieth century was just that- a movement- rather than a style alone or mere fashion. This artistic and ideological movement encompassed many social, economic, industrial and religious drivers and had a great impact on British and international design that still resonates today.

The artists of the Arts and Crafts movement had many shared ideals including the belief that, “a well designed environment- fashioned with beautiful and well crafted buildings, furniture, tapestries and ceramics- would serve to improve the fabric of society for both producers and consumers...” Objects created by these artists were produced using traditional techniques, many specifically from the medieval era, and by hand. A ‘truth to materials’ was key to many who sought to bring out the natural features of materials rather than to disguise them. In an age of industrial mass production, this way of working truly was a radical change in design and production ethos.

United in their ideals, we can also identify a unity in the design and style of the products of those artists, designers, potters, metal workers, architects, thinkers and jewellers of this movement. Murrle Bennett and Company was founded in London in 1884 and although it has been questioned as to whether they actually manufactured jewellery, it is known that they imported and sold jewellery from Germany of the Arts and Crafts style.
