Tanzanite growing in popularity at auction
Zoisite was named after the Austrian scientist Sigmund von Zois who first discovered it in Carinthia, Austria. Zoisite is often found alongside garnets. Discovered in Tanzania in 1967, blue tanzanite is a valuable and highly desirable gem stone of the zoisite family. It was the prominent New York jewellers Tiffany and Co. that first introduced the name for the gem and hoped to have the monopoly on selling it in their stores. Such was its initial popularity, it is reported that around two million carats of tanzanite were mined in the first four years after it was discovered.
Tanzanite is both geologically and geographically rare and is found mostly in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzanite exists in colours including green, grey and brown however the real monetary value is in the blue variety which has a distinctive purple hue distinguishing it from sapphires.
McTear’s has seen a rise in the popularity of the stone over the recent years and are pleased to offer several items of tanzanite jewellery in The Jewellery Auction this April, including earrings, necklaces and rings.
