McTear's - Selling Art at Auction...on a Sunday! The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction at McTear's is next set to take place at McTear's on Sunday Februaury 22nd.

So what will be on offer? Here's a summary of what's set to go 'under the hammer':

An excellent private collection of nine works by Peter Howson, the collection of a retired Physics teacher, includes the museum-standard ‘Self Portrait’ (lot 2215). This striking painting strongly shows the influence of the Old Masters on Howson’s works. Raised in a religious environment, faith plays a tremendously large role in Howson’s paintings– in 2014, McTear’s sold the artist’s first ever oil painting, a crucifixion executed when the artist was only six years old. ‘Self Portrait’ is reminiscent of Old Master paintings of Christ, where the crown of thorns blends idyllically into the background, suggesting such an association is simply an illusion. This artist’s skill knows no bounds! The teacher’s collection comprises of three oil paintings and six drawings - offered sequentially, we hope that this selection will inspire plenty of competition.

Having achieved a world-record hammer price for Herbert Whone's ‘Back Court– Anderson’ (formerly lot 1705) in January’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction, McTear’s is thrilled to offer another strong example of the late English artist’s work from his renowned ‘Glasgow in Transition’ period. ‘Dockside’ (lot 2152) is a bevy of colour and has already attracted the interest of those who have walked by the painting, currently on display at McTear’s. There’s no doubt about it, this is an artist whose star is beginning to shine very brightly.

So, an exciting array of Scottish Contemporary Art, including work by Muriel Barclay, Pam Carter, Jolomo, Hamish Macdonald, Ruth Stage, James S. Davis, Bryan Evans, Shelagh Campbell, Adrian Wisniewski, John Bellany, and Alexander Millar (to name but a few!) will feature on Sunday February 22nd – whether you’ll be bidding in the room, on the telephone or online, we wish you the very best of luck!
