Rare chronograph watch makes top hammer price in Glasgow The star of the show of The Watches Auction for any watch collector was Lot 1609, the wonderful H. Moser & Cie one button chronograph gentleman’s wristwatch selling way above the £200-£400 estimate at £1300 hammer. It was a treat to see such a great example of an early, transitional wristwatch come through our doors. Watches such as this were vital in the move away from fob and pocket watches towards wristwatches. Pre-1900, few men wore “wristwatches” which were seen as something of a novelty and reserved mainly for women. Real men, you see, wore pocket watches suspended on an Albert Chain! However, once fob watches began to be mounted on a strap and worn around the wrist for ease of use in military situations, more and more men started to wear watches in this way. Please keep an eye on our blog for a feature piece on the birth and rise of the wristwatch coming soon.

Rolex continued to hold its own as the watchmaker of choice with Lot 1582, a lady’s bi-colour ROLEX DATEJUST, selling above estimate at £1300. Well viewed, and much admired throughout the viewing, it seems that there is no sign of this iconic timepiece going out of fashion any time soon.

Another of the perennial best sellers, Breitling, flexed its muscle also with Lot 1577, a gentleman’s BREITLING OLD NAVITIMER II, selling above its lower estimate at £1700. The continued success of the established names shows just how much a strong history and a record of excellence matters when choosing a wristwatch.
