Black Bowmore realises top hammer price at McTear's With the sun peeking out behind some clouds on Wednesday morning, The Whisky Auction looked to brighten up the day. A strong selection of Highland and Islay whisky tempted the clients out, despite the sun staying hidden!

The beautiful haven of Islay took the lead in this sale, with strong entries from the island all but eclipsing the Highland and Speyside distilleries. The ubiquitous Black Bowmore, this time a 2nd Edition, headed the pack. Lot 1302 raced ahead to make £3,400 hammer. Held in the highest esteem within the whisky community, this was a very respectable price realised.

The Bowmore’s Island neighbour, the Laphroaig 13yr old (Lot 1063), took second place with a strong £1,300 hammer. This beautiful bottle dates from 1980 when the amber nectar was bottled by William Cadenhead of Aberdeen. An exciting jump from the lovely Laphroaig’s estimate and perhaps a taste of things to come? Watch this space!

The Highland Park 22yr old (lot 1059) bottled the year before the Laphroaig by Cadenhead also attracted a good amount of international interest. This charming bottle reached a very pleasing £1,200 hammer. It is now off to its new home where we are sure it will be valued as highly as it deserves.
The island’s other favourite son, Ardbeg, put on a good show as lot 1014, the 10 year old, reached a strong £1,200 hammer. McTear’s have some very exciting Ardbeg bottles to come up in September, let’s hope they keep us on the edge of our seats, just as this bottle did!

Rounding out our top 5 was a tie between the ever-popular MacCallan and a surprisingly good show from Glenlivet. The Smiths Glenlivet 1939 (lot 1176) inspired some fierce bidding reaching an impressive £1,100 – a tie for 5th place with the mighty Macallan. This 1966 Anniversary Malt (lot 1070) proves that all good things never go out of style.

We look forward now to September and the turning of the summer drizzle into autumn winds. The Whisky Auction, coming up in September, has already attracted some real gems and is sure to throw up some more surprises, so join the global whisky audience from 10.30am on the 3rd June for the chance to bid on more rare and collectable bottles.
