Bowmore Booms at McTear's! Looking forward with glee as we head into the Summer months and wave goodbye to Spring, there was one final piece of booze business to be conducted, in the shape of two McTear’s auctions , firstly The Rare & Collectable Whisky Auction quickly followed by an equally exciting Wine Auction. Both turned heads and both brought about their usual mix of emotions for buyers and sellers alike.
As with any good auction Macallan featured heavily in the proceedings and also produced some great results. The 1938 (lot 1200) bottle lived up to its expected outcome and fetched a priced deserved for such a fantastic bottling and achieved a hammer price of £4,200. The next notable Macallan was the 1957 distillation (lot 1169)bottled by Campbell, Hope & King, after some fierce competition the bottle eventually settled at a hammer of £2,200. The 1981 Royal Wedding (lot 1180) bottling which always performs well at auction took a huge jump from its previous price of £1,300 in November last year to make £2,000 for its lucky owner. Lot 1176 The Macallan Gran Reserva 1979 made its record price at McTear’s obtaining an amazing price of £1,000, this bottle shall soon be making its way down south to its lucky new owner.
The most astounding result of the day has to go to the Black Bowmore 1964 2nd Edition (lot 1148). Although these bottlings of Bowmore are held in the highest of regard, especially by the incredibly lucky folk whom have had the pleasure to taste the whisky. The bottling itself has been making a solid £3,000-3,600 for a while now so the result this bottle produced was as equally jaw dropping as the whisky itself making a record price of £4,600.
From that Islay delight back to the some of the great mainland whiskies that performed with a swagger in this auction. The Benromach 55 Year old (lot 1048) attracted a great deal of interest due to the fact that only 83 bottles of this whisky were produced, it eventually settled dead in the middle of its estimate at £3,500. A very rare bottling of Springbank 1962 made an appearance in this auction and it did not fail to deliver on a tremendous final price of £3,000 making over £1,000 more that the high end of its estimate. Another great performer was from the increasingly collectable Glenrothes distillery, this example being their 1967 distillation (lot 1051) after some serious bidding the bottle settled at the higher end of its estimate at £1,000.
Now onto The Wine Auction which has been growing in popularity in recent times. There were a few notable lots, the first being a case of Sauternes from Chateau Suduiraut 1959 Ancien Cru du Roy (lot 1411) which went on to achieve a hammer of £1,300. A very rare bottling of Bollinger 1929 (lot 1399) was also up for grabs, the special attraction of this bottle was the fact that this was the Centenary Vintage 1829-1929 bottling and after some great bidding it finally concluded at a price of £600.
So to June next where the next whisky auction is already under rigorous construction and we await with bated breath to see what other surprises are in store, so join the global whisky audience from 10.30am on the 3rd June for the chance to bid on more Rare & Collectable Whisky.
