Selling Bowmore At Auction
Bowmore Distillery was established by John P. Simpson, a local merchant, in 1779, although illicit whisky production on the site may be traced back to 1776. The various owners showed a flair for innovation in trading, and Barnard noted in 1885-86 that a 145 ton puffer was used for conveyance of whisky to Glasgow, as well as general business.

From Simpson the ownership passed to the Mutters, a family of German origin, then in 1925 to John B. Sheriff in 1950, before eventually being purchased in 1951 by Stanley P. Morrison, who then went on to form the Morrison Bowmore Company in 1963. The distillery is now owned by Suntory.

Bowmore distillery has been recognised for good environmental practice, and has donated a bonded warehouse to the village in which it is situated, which has been converted into a swimming pool. The pool is heated using water from the condensers in the Bowmore still room.
Mutter’s Whisky Maps are highly sought after examples of whisky memorabilia.
Older bottles of Bowmore, especially those from limited releases, now attract auction hammer prices which represent a significant return on original retail prices.
