Arts & Crafts furniture selling well at Glasgow auction! As recently noted by various antiques trade magazines, the market is strong for mahogany furniture, and The Furniture & Works of Art Auction proved this. Within the first ten minutes of the auction, lot 725, the beautiful Arts & Crafts mahogany fire surround with original copper hood, side panels and hearth, sparked huge local interest, with the hammer eventually landing on £750. This fireplace was original made for a large detached property built by the wealthy Parks family in Carmyle in the east end of Glasgow. Proving that Arts & Crafts furniture is ever-popular at auction, lot 724, an Arts & Crafts fire surround from the same house sold for £280; similarly, a pair of Art Nouveau copper hall lanterns from the same house, lot 726, sold for £380.

One of the surprise lots of the night was a group of four 19th-century embroidered samplers, lot 744 in the auction. With interest from the USA and after competitive bidding online, the samplers sold for £550 hammer. The lot included early 19th-century examples and, although faded, the samplers were in nice condition. Lot 763 also escalated in price with online competition. This collection of pipes included Meerschaum and Dunhill examples, and the competitive bids may be explained by the addition of a rare gent’s Dunhill pipe to the lot.

The auction did not slow in pace, as shown by 792, a French Empire swivel mirror, with the mirror supported above a classical winged maiden. With internet and phone interest, this mirror eventually made £700 – a terrific result! McTear’s are now accepting consignments for The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, to be held on 24th March.
