Buoyant Furniture Market at McTear's Auctioneers The Furniture and Works of Art Auction is always a super mix of lots. It is an unpredictable auction that always throws up surprises. So on the 2nd June, furniture, sport and 20th century design all featured and performed well.

The top selling lot for the auction was a wonderful camphorwood gentleman’s wardrobe (lot 795) which was reputedly made for the Shah of Persia at the end of the 19th century. A serious piece of luxury furniture, it made £950 hammer.

Other notable furniture lots were a set of four Mackintosh style chairs (lot 854), making £550 hammer, and the George III serpentine chest (lot 719), also making £550 hammer.

Sports-related lots also featured well at the auction. Of most interest was a group of medals, shirts and caps won by John Lindsay (lot 853) and that made £550. But a bigger surprise was the Tom Morris framed display that made £550 hammer (lot 725). In the frame were club heads and balls that were much sought after and they also made £550. The last lot of sports collectables arrived in the form of  lot 821, and these were motor racing posters from 1913. They were not in the best condition but they ‘raced away’ for £440!

Such variety in the sale, always make for a fun auction! To consign to The Furniture & Works of Art, coming up 7th July, please contact brian@mctears.co.uk or telephone 0141 810 2880.
