Flintlock and Percussion Firearms achieve top hammer results at McTear's The Furniture & Works of Art, Medals & Militaria Auction, held at 7pm 22nd March, proved that the collectors’ thirst for military ephemera and firearms is as strong as ever. The auction was marked by a series of flintlock and percussion pistols and revolvers, and one of the top hammer results for this run of firearms came in the form of lot 954, a pair of percussion pistols by Louis Malherbe of Leige. Estimated at £400-600, the hammer eventually landed on £700. Similarly, lot 947, a Colt Percussion model 1849 0.36 calibre pocket revolver, circa 1856, achieved £600 hammer, and lot 949, a late 19th century flintlock pistol by William Jover achieved £550 hammer after competition in the room.

Some interesting collectables also created much interest on the viewing and during the auction. In particular, lot 835, a Holy Bible published in 1638, achieved £400 hammer. Moreover, another Holy Bible printed by Robert Barker (lot 836) and published in London 1639, together with another Georgian bible, made £380 hammer. The curling enthusiasts amongst the McTear’s buyers were also delighted to spot a range of curling stones offered in the auction. Lot 925, a 19TH century whinstone curling stone, is an unusual example due to the engraving to the brass handle. Accordingly, it was well-viewed pre-auction and went on to achieve a hammer result of £220. Lot 884, a pair of Welsh Trefor stone curling stones, also created a battle of bidding in the saleroom, with the hammer landing on £220.
