Hermes scarf to be auctioned in Glasgow! called after its association and popularization via the actress Princess Grace Kelly. However, Hermès of Paris has a long and rich history, founded in 1837 and now specializing in leather, homeware, perfumery and ready-to-wear fashion. As well as offering luxury leather goods, Hermès is known as brand for its silk scarves, and McTear’s are delighted to offer one such example in The Furniture & Works of Art Auction this November (lot).

Hermès was founded by Thierry Hermès (1801 – 1878) as a harness workshop in the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris, first serving European noblemen. Inherited by Theirry’s sons Adolphe and Émile-Maurice, the movement of the Hermès brand towards fashion and accessories was cemented when exclusive rights to use the zipper for leather goods and clothing were granted. In 1918, Hermès made a leather golf jacket with a zipper for Edward, Price of Wales, and by 1922, the company had introduced its first leather handbags. In 1929, the first women’s couture collection was previewed in Paris, and in 1937 the Hermès carrés (scarves) were introduced. The Hermès scarves became part of French culture, with the company’s designers drawing inspiration from paintings books and objets d’art. When Hermès began scarf production, a dedicated factory was created in Lyon, France, and to this day, the company rejects the notion of mass production. Hermès goods are made by smaller workshops, with the emphasis on quality manufacture.

Hermès scarves were first made from raw Chinese silk which was spun into yarn as then woven into fabric stronger and heavier than others available during the 1930s. Hermès scarves today are made from the silk of 250 mulberry moth cocoons, with each hem being hand-stitched and the pattern being individually screen-printed. Designers of Hermès scarves spend years creating new patterns, and they chose from over 70,000 different colours. Two silk-scarf collections are released each year, and since 1937, Hermès has produced over 2000 designs for scarves, and the Hermès scarf has been popularized by celebrities, including Grace Kelly. Scarves account for 12% of Hermès sales, and it is said that a scarf by Hermès is sold somewhere in the world every 25 seconds.
