McTear's - the place to sell antique furniture! The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, held 28th April from 6pm proved the timeless appeal of antique furniture. Of note was lot 823, a pair of 1930s tan leather and oak club chairs. These stylish chairs were made by Rackstraw of Worcester, and after fierce competition in the room and on the phone, the hammer landed on £950, three times the original lower estimate.

Similarly, bidders fought it out for one of the star lots of the auction – the early Victorian brass bound teak campaign chest, lot 746. Campaign furniture has enduring appeal due to its elegant utilitarian design, and this particular chest was slightly more unusual due to the flush handle design at the sides of the chest. Moreover, the handles were stamped ‘Silver & Co’, an excellent maker of campaign furniture. Bidders fought it out in the room, on the phone and over the internet for the chest, with the chest making a hammer price of £900. An excellent result!

The Parker & Farr ‘Cive’ sette, retailed by Harrods (lot 753) and in very nice condition sparked competitive bidding in the room, selling for £1000 hammer; it is also worth mentioning a lovely Victorian moulded glass three light chandelier (lot 746), which made £460 hammer after competition online.

One of the more unusual lots of the evening came in the shape of fourteen suit lengths of Scottish tweed (lot 729). Two room bidders in particular battled for the large quantity of tweed, with the eventual hammer making £460 against an original estimate of £100-200!

The Furniture & Works of Art Auction is being held 2nd June, with a section of the auction dedicated specifically to sports memorabilia. For more information on the auction, or to consign, please contact auction@mctears.co.uk or telephone 0141 810 2880.
