Victorian furniture selling well at Glasgow auction! Small and compact examples of predominantly Georgian and Victorian furniture led the way at The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, held 7th July from 6pm. Despite offering a range of dressers and chests of drawers, for the most part, the more compact examples commanded higher hammer prices. Early in the auction, lot 722, a walnut tray table, saw fierce competition in the room and online, with the hammer landing on £320. Similarly, lot 732, a Victorian inlaid two-tier revolving bookcase, always popular at auction, did exceptionally well this month. With an estimate of £100-200, the bookcase made £300 hammer. A charming little Victorian Wellington chest, lot 798, got the bidders into a frenzy and made £240, a princely sum for a little piece of furniture. Always popular at auction, lot 815, an early 20th century carved oak monk’s bench, made £220 hammer after competition in the room and on the telephone.

Furniture was not the only star of the show, however - one of the standout lots of the evening was an autograph book from the 1960s, signed by The Beatles and by other 60s bands. The book had been in the possession of the vendor from the 1960s, and it also contained many other signatures and notes from family members - a very sweet little book indeed! Estimated at £700-1000, the book sold to an online buyer in America for £1600 hammer, proving the ever-enduring appeal of ephemera and memorabilia associated with The Beatles.

From bronze statues and sideboards to armchairs and snuff boxes, McTear’s are currently accepting consignments for The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, coming up August 11th. To consign to this auction, please contact or telephone 0141 810 2880
