Sam Bough was born in Carlisle and later settled in
Manchester where he worked as a scene painter in the
Theatre Royal. Later mover to Glasgow where his
reputation as a landscape painter
grew. He later developed an interest in marine painting

he moved to Edinburgh and visited Fife fishing villages.

Born in Dundee, Patrick's work is detailed and more

of Scotland. He painted many carefully observed oils of
Angus and later taught art in Dundee.

Hunter was born in Rothesay and took up painting
after a visit to Paris in 1904. He was self-educated

London, a group later referred to as the Scottish
Colourists.

Cowieson travelled to South Africa, Malaya and Java in
the 1890s when this work was likely painted. Also painted
beach scenes and interiors on the east coast of Scotland.

343 John Duncan Fergusson RBA (1874-1961),
Trees Under a Blue Sky, South of France,

Born in Leith, Fergusson visited Paris in the 1890s
where he
studied the Impressionists. After a one-man show in
Scotland in
1923, he exhibited with the other 'Colourists' Peploe,
Cadell and Hunter in London and Paris. After exhibiting
in New York he
settled in Paris from 1925-1939 then returned to Scotland
where he was a founder member of the New Art Club.
