The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, held Tuesday 31st May, kicked off with roaring success as lot 823 soared past its estimate of £15000-20000, achieving an extraordinary hammer price of £58000. With five phone bidders competing for this lot, as well as competition online and in the room, this lot was sought after for good reason. It is a nine carat gold replica European Cup which was won by Celtic FC in the season 1966-67, and presented to the then chairman Robert Kelly in 1967. The lot was purchased by a buyer in the local area – watch this space for more details!

Continuing the Celtic FC theme, lot 822, a Scottish Football Association Scottish Cup Winners Medal in fifteen carat gold, also attracted much pre-auction interest. The medal was won by Joe Dodds in the season 1910-11, and after fierce competition in the room, it was won by a local buyer, selling for £1500 hammer.

Militaria and curious collectables also piqued the interest of bidders. Lot 807, a fascinating Peninsular War British Army General Service Medal 1793-1814, was purchased for £1300, exceeding its £800-1200 estimate. This medal was awarded to living veterans of the Napoleonic Wars, and is testament to fascinating period of military history. Also of note in the auction is the offering of three Victorian ram’s head snuff mulls. The first snuff mull to be offered, lot 824, by Henry William Dee, sold for £1700 hammer, with the second of the snuff mulls selling for £1000 hammer. Other lots worth checking include 961, an attractive double-sided glass ‘Aitchie’s Ale’ illuminating pub sign, which made £1000 hammer, and limited edition hardback books, including ‘The Beatles: Hamburg Days Deluxe Edition’ (lot 879, £1000 hammer) and lot 874, ‘Transformer: Lou Reed and Mick Rock Deluxe Edition’ (£480 hammer).

The Furniture & Works of Art Auction makes an appearance again on Friday 8th July. To consign to this auction, please email auction@mctears.co.uk or telephone 0141 810 2880 for free auction advice.
