McTear's Vintage & Modern sales are collective auctions of chattels from the 19th century onwards. Each auction will typically consist of 50-80 lots of jewellery, 50-80 lots of silver and silver plate, 200-300 lots of ceramics, glass and objects of art, 40-50 lots of pictures and 100-150 lots of furniture. Vintage & Modern auctions are now featured on McTear's website with a full list of lots appearing on the evening prior to the auction view day.

To buy at a Vintage & Modern auction, simply come along to the viewing on Mondays from 9am till 7pm or prior to the sale from 9am on the auction day. These sales are listed on McTear's website and you may also purchase a list of lots on offer at the auction rooms. Members of staff are on hand to offer advice on bidding and to advise on lot estimates.

To sell at one of these auctions, simply bring your items along to our Valuation Counter any Saturday from 9.30am till 12 noon, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 8.30am till 5pm, or on Thursdays until 7pm. You will be given a free valuation on the item or collection and, if you decide to proceed with selling, you will be advised of the auction date and issued with a receipt.

If the item you bring along is considered to be more suited to one of our monthly internationally marketed auction sales, you will be advised accordingly.

If you cannot bring the items to us, either call us on 0141 810 2880 to discuss having an experienced valuer visit you to advise on selling, or send your email enquiry to bwc@mctears.co.uk. It is always useful, though not essential, to send an image in jpeg format with your email enquiry. Auction valuations are free at our salerooms and at your home or office.

The types of lot that are sold at these auctions is wide ranging as is the value of items represented....

The Jewellery section of these sales will generally consist of Victorian and modern diamond and gemset rings, brooches and chains, costume jewellery, coins, medals and badges with lot values from around £20 up to several hundred pounds.
Silver in each Vintage & Modern auction will again include modern as well as antique pieces. Typically, the sale will consist of several tea services, candlesticks, cake baskets and comports, along with collectable 'objects of vertu', such as vesta and other small boxes. There are usually many lots of cutlery, including cased spoons and suites in fitted canteens.
Usually the largest section in each sale, the Ceramics & Objects category consists of several hundred lots of ornaments, tea & dinner sets, collectables including postcard and stamp albums, sculptures, brass and bronze works of art.
The wide range of ceramics on show will often include good examples from famous factories such as Doulton, Worcester & Coalport, as well as German, French and other continental makers. Again purchases can be made for a few pounds, or several hundred.
The Picture section includes works in oil, watercolour and pastel, as well as lithographs, etchings and engravings.
As you would expect, there are usually many examples by Scottish artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, with landscapes, still life and portraits represented. It is possible to pick up decorative works regularly for less than £50.
Each week the main saleroom is full of furniture that has been collected from private clients and executries, or brought straight to us by vendors.
Every auction will include dozens of lots of occasional furniture, dining, bedroom, lounge and drawing room suites, standard lamps, sets of chairs and hallstands. Victorian chests of drawers stand alongside reproduction and modern pieces, giving a variety of furniture unequalled in Glasgow with estimates from under £30 to over £500.
