SALVAGED
FROM THE WRECK
OF
"THE S.S. POLITICIAN"
The S.S. Politician
sank of the Island of Eriskay on Thursday, 5th February
1941. The islanders awoke to discover the battered hulk of the 8,000-ton
general cargo vessel S.S. Politician firmly aground off Calvey
Island in The Sound of Eriskay. Having sailed two days previously
from Liverpool, the ship was bound for the North Atlantic
Within hours the
secret of the stricken vessels hold's were unlocked, word soon
spread among the Islanders that the cargo included some 250,000
bottles of whisky. For weeks thereafter, Islanders regularly
visited the wreck and liberated an estimated 9,000 cases before H.M.
Customs and police intervened
There
was, off course, a great shortage of whisky at that time,
throughout this country. According to local tails, much of the
whisky was hidden and forgotten about. The following lot was
recovered by S.S. Politician PLC and was given to The Famous Glen
Malt Whisky Company for blending purposes, however the bottle,
although lacking its original cork, was never used.

BLACK BOWMORE-1964
THE FINAL EDITION
The following lot is one bottle of The Final Edition of Black Bowmore bottled in 1995. During the course of 1963, Stanley P. Morrison, the new owners of The Bowmore Distillery, invested in an extensive upgrading of the distillery. The traditional copper pot stills were converted from direct coal firing to indirect steam firing. The first distillate following this conversion, Black Bowmore, has been matured in the original distillery vaults below sea level where it has lain undisturbed until it's day of bottling. Remarkably complex yet mellow, Black Bowmore is a superb example of an Islay whisky matured in walnut brown sherry casks supplied by George Gorrod & Sons, the well known Aberdeen cooperage who specialised in the supply of big wood
