SMWS: A celebration of single cask whisky

SMWS: A celebration of single cask whisky

When it was formed in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society was decidedly ahead of its time. Given that the average whisky drinker of the day favoured easily approachable blends, a club devoted to full-on single malt whisky bottled straight from the cask at eye-watering strength seemed niche to say the least. However, the tide was turning, and slowly but surely more and more people began to appreciate the depth of flavour and challenging complexities of single malt Scotch. Whether prescience on their part or just luck, the SMWS have capitalised on this whisky renaissance, offering afficionados the opportunity to experience their tipple of choice in its purest form. Now, nearly forty years later, and boasting branches and partner bars around the world, they have become one of the best-known bottlers in the industry.

At McTear’s, we’re thrilled to be hosting an auction dedicated to The Society and featuring a complete set of “The 26 Malts”. To create the series, the SMWS paired up a group of 26 artists with 26 writers. Each pair was tasked with creating a unique label that captured the spirit of the whisky sample they’d been given. With only 50 sets ever produced, “The 26 Malts” may just be one of the rarest sets you’re ever likely to see at auction. Throw in over 100 lots featuring individual expressions from distilleries such as Brora, Macallan, Springbank and Yoichi, and you can see why we’re excited.

Viewing is open to the public from Wednesday 25th May at 9am.

Bidding is available in the room, by commission, telephone and online. To submit bids via this online catalogue, please sign in/register.
