A small but fine collection of Chinese jades raised a total of just shy of £6,000 in this, our dedicated auction of Asian Art. The six lots comprised a variety of forms and functions, with two mutton jade roundels being the stand out fetching £2,600 on the hammer. An unusual armorial tankard also attracted fierce competition. The oddity featured the heraldic device after that of William Nassau de Zuylestein, Earl of Rochford, though contained an amusing mistake. The original motto 'Spes Durat Avorum' ('Let the Hope of our Ancestors Endure') has here been misspelt by the decorator as 'Spes Durat Amorum', a charming and easily made mistake by a native worker working to an order, changing the meaning to 'Let the Hope of our Love(r)s Endure'.
Entries are invited for our next Asian art sale taking place on 2nd September. Advice on selling is free and without obligation.
