August is off to a great start at McTear’s with the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction. The Sunday afternoon sale brought about exciting competition on a number of lots, ending with some phenomenal hammer prices. There was some excitement at the beginning of the sale, with lot 540, an oil by Ian G Orchardson; much admired on the view, the oil, estimated at £100-200 went away with a hammer of £600. Mid-way through the sale, a string of lithographs by David Shrigley preformed well, with consistent results across the 8 lots. Fierce competition over the phone and online brought about hammer prices of £440 and £750 for lots 685 and 687 respectively, both small oils depicting Glasgow. An early oil by Jack Vettriano, signed as Jack Hoggan, sold for £4,000, after tense bidding between phone bidders. A few lots sold for well over their expected estimate, with lots 601 and 668 turning out the most exciting results. Lot 601, Three Roses in a Blue Jug, an oil by Emily Patrick succeeded its original estimate of £200-400, with a hammer price of £1,500. Lot 668 an oil of Nice, France by Cecil Rochfort D’Oyly John also surpassed its estimate of £200-400, with a final hammer price of £1,100. With results like these, the excitement is sure to continue in our further sales in the coming month!
