EDWARD ATKINSON HORNEL (1864 - 1933), BY THE SEA oil on canvas, signed and dated (18)98, titled on gallery labels verso 29cm x 24.5cm Framed Labels verso: Aitken Dott & Son (The Scottish Gallery), 26 Castle Street, Edinburgh. With title and Cat. no. 9376; together with Bourne Fine Art (Now The Fine Art Society), 6 Dundas Street, Edinburgh. With title, artist's name and dated '98. Note: An exceptional pre 1900 Hornel acquired by the vendor within the last fifteen years from Bourne Fine Art (The Fine Art Society), Edinburgh, one of Scotland's most respected and prestigious art galleries.: In 1893 Hornel and George Henry set off for Japan, financed by the Glasgow dealer Alex Reid and William Burrell, a patron of the arts. Hornel produced some of his finest paintings during this period and returned to paint the Galloway woods around his home in Kirkcudbright. Hornel was gradually moving away from naturalistic subjects, which continued to inspire other members of the Glasgow Boys, towards symbolic and allegorical subjects such as the seasons, Celtic myths and stories involving wood spirits and rural genies. The present work is dated 1898 and was painted shortly after Hornel's return from Japan. The bright colours and composition reveal the influences of his Japanese paintings. One hundred and eighty three examples of Hornel's paintings are recorded in public collections in Scotland, around the UK, in the USA and in Canada.
