EDWARD ATKINSON HORNEL (SCOTTISH 1864 - 1933), SUMMER IN A JAPANESE GARDEN oil on canvas, signed and dated 1925 61.5cm x 50cm Framed Provenance: Private Scottish collection. Note: born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia. Shortly after he was born his parents left for Kirkcudbright in Scotland, where he remained for most of his life. He was associated with the Glasgow Boys and was strongly influenced by Japanese art, spending eighteen months in the country in 1894-5 with George Henry. He is noted for his flat tapestry-like paintings in jewelled colours, depicting girls in gardens and woodlands. No less than 183 of his paintings are held in public collections throughout the UK including every major Scottish Museum or gallery.
