A LATE 19TH CENTURY EAST DULWICH BC MEDAL

LATE 19TH CENTURY EAST DULWICH BC MEDAL,
of Maltese cross form, the obverse with central circular plague depicting a figure upon a penny farthing, the reverse inscribed 'East Dulwich BC 5 Mile Championship won by E.W.Thain, 6th Oct 1883', unmarked, 43mm high including bale, unmarked, 17.5g

Note: This cycling medal was awarded to E.W. Thain for the 5 Mile Championship race on Crystal Palace’s first dedicated cycle track, only 3 years after it opened. An article in The South London Press of 13 October 1883 relays the race results, recording that 'in the last lap of the fifth mile, Thaine, probably thinking it high time to make an effort, dashed in front, and won by 20 yards...'
