Note: Joseph Farquharson was a Scottish Laird, as well as a celebrated and successful landscape painter, known particularly for his dramatic scenes of sheep in glittering, technicolour snow. He inherited his family estate of Finzean in Aberdeenshire in 1918, following the death of his brother, though he had already lived and painted there for many years. On 31st August 2005 "Through the Calm and Frosty Air" by Farquharson was sold by Sotheby's for £310,400 (premium). Sixty-one examples of Farquharson's work are held in UK public collections including The National Galleries of Scotland, The Hunterian, The Royal Academy (London), The Fleming Collection, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Hull (Ferens), Coventry (Herbert), Paisley Art Institute, The Walker Gallery and The Royal Scottish Academy.
