Lot 38

* JOHN BELLANY CBE RA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942 - 2013), MIZPAH watercolour on paper, signed and titled 77cm x 58cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: A self-portrait of Bellany and his wife Helen. The picture is titled "Mizpah" a Hebrew for "lord watch over me." As mentioned in the Bible, Mizpah marked an agreement between two people, with God as their witness. It also translates to "watchtower".  In 1967 Bellany visited Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar, in Germany, which made a searing and lasting impression on him.  This is a complex composition and is packed with many of Bellany’s typical opaque symbols including the fishing boat nearing the rocks and the phallic lighthouse. "Mizpah" is clearly Helen watching over her husband and keeping him safe from the temptations and dangers of life. His eyes gaze forwards but hers are cleary focussed entirely on him. He depicts her as taller (and stronger) than him. Bellany uses the ace of hearts, the two of clubs and the ace of clubs, each has powerful and specific meanings. Provenance: Private Glasgow collection.
