Lot 4

* JOSEPH DENHAM SHEARER (SCOTTISH b 1928 - ), 'SO MAGGIE RUNS, THE WITCHES FOLLOW' tempera on board, signed 24.5cm x 35cm Framed Note: This and the following two lots are part of a series of tempera paintings completed before 1968 by Joe Shearer. Originally from Ayr, he worked on some of Walt Disney's blockbuster cartoons before becoming head illustrator for Hanna Barbera, involved with Scooby Doo and the Flintstones. Several YouTube renditions of Tam O'Shanter feature these illustrations and the Shearer series almost certainly inspired Alexander Goudie to paint the more recent series of 54 paintings which were ''saved for the nation'' by Brian Souter and Tom Hunter for a reported £500,000 and then donated to South Ayrshire Art Gallery, Rozelle House, Alloway. Shearer had a passion for the work of Robert Burns and had illustrated books published. His series are arguably the best known and most widely viewed illustrations of Tam O'Shanter.

A condition report is offered as an indication of any issues visible to the naked eye. As none of our staff is a professional conservator or restorer, buyers must satisfy themselves in respect of condition and McTear’s can provide contact details of local professionals who can provide fully comprehensive expert reports, usually for a modest charge. The condition report does not form part of any contract between McTear's and the buyer, and all lots are offered "as is" in accordance with our Terms of Business available on our website.
