PORT BHAN, IONA, SCOTTISH COLOURIST SCHOOL

SCOTTISH COLOURIST SCHOOL,
PORT BHAN, IONA
oil on canvas
107cm x 101.8cm
Framed
Note: This very large canvas has been lined at some point in its history (not recent). In today's terms, this very high standard lining procedure would cost around £1500 - 2000. The frame has hand carved embellishments and a previous and unknown owner has clearly invested a considerable amount in ensuring this painting is presented and maintained to a very high standard. The painting was part of a deceased estate and was purchased by the current vendor a number of years ago. The palette is similar to that of Francis Cadell and the very flat colour could also be likened to early Cadell who frequently painted on Iona and visited there virtually every summer between 1912 and 1933. The large dimensions of this painting are unusual for any Scottish Colourist painting of Iona as invariably the artists worked "en plein air". This might suggest it was a commissioned version of a smaller work. The lining process may also have covered a signature on the back of the canvas. The lack of further provenance, which might also suggest a private commission, makes it inappropriate to specifically attribute this painting to any individual artist, but our conclusion is that it's a legitimate work by an artist working in the Scottish Colourist era and with obvious likenesses in palette and style to known works by Francis Cadell, especially his early painting of the same title.

A condition report is offered as an indication of any issues visible to the naked eye. As none of our staff is a professional conservator or restorer, buyers must satisfy themselves in respect of condition and McTear’s can provide contact details of local professionals who can provide fully comprehensive expert reports, usually for a modest charge. The condition report does not form part of any contract between McTear's and the buyer, and all lots are offered "as is" in accordance with our Terms of Business available on our website.
