Note: Sholto Douglas was born in Edinburgh, a member of the aristocratic Queensberry family, part of the Clan Douglas. He studied at The Slade (London), at the Academie Julian (Paris) and at Antwerp and initially focused on portraiture, often of society figures and of the aristocracy. On 9th November 1912, under the headline "Sholto J Douglas Coming Here" the New York Times reported Douglas's sailing from London to the US, having "a number of commissions to paint portraits in New York". Back in London, Douglas was part of London's most fashionable cultural and social circles which included many of the most notable personalities of the time. In 1895, Sholto Douglas stood surety for Oscar Wilde's bail money. More than 50 examples of Sholto Johnstone Douglas's work are included in UK public collections
