WALLER HUGH PATON RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1828 - 1895),
WORDSWORTH'S RESTING PLACE
watercolour on paper, signed with a monogram and dated 1862
24cm x 35cm
Mounted, framed and under glass.
Label verso: Highgate Gallery, Miranda and Julian Halsby, 26 High Street, London. See notes with lot 532. Note: William Wordsworth was much admired by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites and therefore the visit to St Oswald's Church, Grasmere in the Lake District would have been something of a pilgrimage for Paton. Wordsworth regularly worshiped at St Oswald's and his grave, along with those of his family, is in the shadow of one of the eight Yew trees he planted in the churchyard. Wordsworth described Grasmere as "The fairest place on Earth" and St Oswald's remains one of the most visited literary shrines in the world.
