Note: Smith was born in the south of England and in 1843 moved to Alnwick, Northumberland, where he received tuition from Thomas Miles Richardson Snr. He is well known for his paintings of waterfalls and rivers to the extent that he was often referred to as "Waterfall Smith" . Several of his paintings are in the collection at Alnwick Castle.
