AN 18TH CENTURY CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN ARMORIAL MUG

18TH CENTURY CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN ARMORIAL MUG,
Qianlong period, of slightly tapered form, with gilt and enamelled heraldic device after that of William Nassau de Zuylestein, Earl of Rochford, the rim with diapered pattern en grisaille, with moulded bamboo-effect handle, 11cm high

Footnote: William Nassau was one of the most trusted allies of William of Orange, earning the peerage for his service; the original legend 'Spes Durat Avorum' ('Let the Hope of our Ancestors Endure') has here been misspelt by the decorator as 'Spes Durat Amorum', a charming and easily made mistake by a native worker working to an order, changing the meaning to 'Let the Hope of our Love(r)s Endure'.
