Originally called Clynelish, the Sutherland distillery we now know as Brora had to change its name in 1975 to avoid confusion with the modern Clynelish 2 distillery operating next door. Clynelish 2 was built to replace the dated Brora facility, which was struggling to keep up with the increasing demand placed upon it by the surging popularity of the Johnnie Walker blend. However, only a year after it was decommissioned Brora was pressed back into service, this time making heavily peated whisky to pick up the slack for Johnnie Walker while Caol Ila distillery on Islay was being renovated. Eventually the distillery’s owners decided it was no longer required, and in 1983 the site was mothballed once more.
But that wasn’t the end. As the years have rolled by, demand for Brora as a single malt has steadily grown, resulting in owners, Diageo, announcing plans in 2017 to reopen the distillery.
