Note: In 1793 the 12th Earl of Cassillis, who’s country seat was Culzean Castle, formed a troop of yeomanry among the local farmers and townsfolk known as ‘The Earl of Carrick’s Own Yeomanry’ (Ayrshire ayeomanry Cavalry), in honour of their royal feudal superior, the Earl of Carrick and heir to the throne. This gave rise to the Ayrshire Yeomanry who saw service with their horses in many campaigns until their disbandment during the first World War.
