JAMES STARK OF RANGERS F.C., SCOTTISH CUP WINNER'S GOLD MEDAL
1902/3

Note: Stark joined Rangers in 1900 from junior team Glasgow Perthshire. He spent seven succesful years at the club, winning two League titles, two Glasgow Cups, captaining the team to the Glasgow International Exhibition trophy in 1901, as well as this Scottish Cup triumph.

He went on to play for Chelsea in 1907, before returning to Rangers, and then Morton. He was a regular in the Morton team to win the War Fund Shield in 1915, his final honour.

He also gained two Scotland caps in 1909, captaining the team in both matches.

This medal comes from the 1903 Scottish Cup final vs. Hearts, the first to go to a second replay. After 1-1 (Stark scoring Rangers' goal in this game) and 0-0 draws, Rangers finally broke the deadlock with a 2-0 victory on April 25th in front of 32,000 supporters.

Auction: The Beautiful Game | Sporting Auction, 27th Mar, 2025

Rare and significant medals proliferate this auction, including an important collection relating to an early International star, James Reid.

This collection features seven medals, two shirts and a cap, with the undoubted highlight being his 1923/24 Scottish Cup medal, won with Airdrieonians - the club's only Scottish Cup.

Historic Old Firm awards are also abundant. For Celtic, Chic Geatons' Empire Exhibition trophy and John Bonnar's Coronation Cup trophy are front and centre. For Rangers, Davie Wilson's historic 1960/61 League Winners' medal has to be a standout, with two further medals relating to Alex Scott.

Viewing is open to the public from Tuesday 25 March at 10am.

Bidding is available in the room, by commission, telephone and online. To submit bids via this online catalogue, please sign in/register.
