DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL GROUP AWARDED TO PTE. JAMES MCRAE
WWI

comprising The 1914-15 Star, The War Medal, The Victory Medal (insc. 2128... HIGH:L.I.) and The Distinguished Conduct Medal (insc. 240470... 1/6 HIGH L.I. - T.F.), along with a photograph of himself, his discharge certificate, two copies of the an excerpt from the London Gazette of 26th January 1918 detailing award of DCM 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer. His work involved carrying men across the open, often under shell fire, for distance up to 600 yards. In spite of these dangerous and trying conditions he showed the greatest energy and a splendid disregard of personal safety in the discharge of his duties.',

Note: James Mcrae joined the 1/6 Highland Light Infantry territorial force in Glasgow in September 1914 and served throughout the entire war. He fought in Gallipoli in 1915 for which he was awarded the 1914-15 star. From there he went to Egypt and then Palestine and is mentioned in dispatches on 28 June 1917, before winning the DCM on 22 October 1917.
