Note: Emily studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and in Paris. She lived at Albyn Place in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1917. She travelled widely in Europe between 1909 and 1934. Shorty after the end of World War One she visited the former battlefields at Ypres in Belgium and produced a series of watercolours depicting the carnage of destroyed buildings including the Ypres Cloth Hall. The collection was exhibited in London in 1919 and several works were acquired by British institutions including the Imperial War Museum. Emily Paterson was a frequent exhibitor at The Royal Academy (London) from 1909 until the year of her death (1934) and a memorial exhibition was held at the Walker Gallery (London) in 1934.
