MANNER OF KURT SCHWITTERS (GERMAN 1887 - 1948),
UNTITLED
mixed media collage
23.5cm x 32cm
Framed and under glass.
Provenance: The vendor has informed us that this picture was acquired from Bonhams, Ipswich on 19th December 2006 lot 266. Lot 266 was a large portfolio of drawings etc and unframed items and the provenance offered by Bonhams was "The estate of the late Philip Granville, P.R.B., N.W.S.". The Times obituary for Philip Granville (20th Sept 2003) stated... GRANVILLE, the director of Lord’s Gallery, ran a small, innovative and ultimately highly successful showcase for modern art from his home in St John’s Wood (London) from 1957, ultimately donating his accumulated wealth to promoting psychological change. He opened his gallery with a wide array of modern painters and sculptors, the likes of Robert Delaunay, Paul Delvaux, Jean Tinguely, Man Ray, Ben Nicholson, Victor Pasmore, Kenneth and Mary Martin and Friedrich Meckseper. He championed work by Kurt Schwitters, contributing enormously to his wider recognition. The vendor has shown us his online account with Bonhams which confirms that he bought lot 266 from Bonhams Ipswich on 19th December 2006. The lot description does not state or fully identify the entire contents of the portfolio. Letters from Philip Granville to Edith "Wantee" Thomas (long term companion to Schwitters) detailing their first meeting in 1958 are held in the collection of the Tate. Lord's Gallery staged a solo show of Kurt Schwitter's work "100 Merz" in October 1958.
