Note: Painter, illustrator, mural artist, stained glass designer and teacher, born in Dundee, Angus. As a schoolboy he began evening classes at the local School of Art and for some years became a newspaper illustrator in Dundee and London. Further studies followed in Antwerp and Düsseldorf, in Dundee with George Dutch Davidson and in Rome, where the early Italian artists made a lasting impression. In Edinburgh Duncan became involved with the Celtic Revival leader Patrick Geddes, for whose home he painted murals. After a visit to America with Geddes in 1899, Duncan taught at Chicago University, 1902–4, before settling back in Edinburgh. He was made RSA in 1923 and RSW in 1930. Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art holds his work.
