CLYDESDALE - RAN ONTO LADY ROCK IN THE SOUND OF MULL, AN OIL BY IAN G ORCHARDSON

* IAN G ORCHARDSON (SCOTTISH 1927 - 1997),
CLYDESDALE - RAN ONTO LADY ROCK IN THE SOUND OF MULL
oil on canvas, signed
41cm x 51cm
Framed and under glass
Note 1: "Clydesdale" served on many west highland routes for David Hutcheson and later David MacBrayne, but became closely associated with the Stornoway mail run in the 1890s and early 1900s. Built by James & George Thomson, Govan in 1862 with a single funnel, she received two funnels when she was reboilered in 1893. In 1905 she stranded on Lady Rock, south of Lismore.
Note 2: Ian G Orchardson lived in Saltcoats on the Ayrshire coast where he taught as an art teacher. He then left teaching to concentrate full time on his interest of painting Clyde shipping. He painted a variety of shipping including Steamers and Clippers as well as the series of six famous 'Doon the Water' stops of Dunoon Pier, Gourock Pier, Greenock Pier, Helensburgh Pier, Rothesay Pier and Wemyss Bay. Orchardson's auction prices have shown a significant increase in recent years and prices of in excess of £500 are commonplace especially in our auctions. The current UK auction record for an Ian G Orchardson painting (achieved by McTear's) is £1100 (hammer).

A condition report is offered as an indication of any issues visible to the naked eye. As none of our staff is a professional conservator or restorer, buyers must satisfy themselves in respect of condition and McTear’s can provide contact details of local professionals who can provide fully comprehensive expert reports, usually for a modest charge. The condition report does not form part of any contract between McTear's and the buyer, and all lots are offered "as is" in accordance with our Terms of Business available on our website.
