Cocktail watch to sell? Come to McTear's!

18/11/2015     Watches

For the first time, the two highest selling watches in the auction were lady’s cocktail watches. This goes against the usual pattern of men’s watches selling better than lady’s and it is encouraging to see that the market is appealing to both sexes.

Lots 771 (an eighteen carat gold and diamond Baume & Mercier) and 766 (an outstanding eighteen carat gold Patek Philippe) both sold at the top end of their estimates to reach the impressive hammer prices of £1500 and £1300 respectively. There was excellent bidding in the room and online with a busy week of viewing translating into bids.

The continued trend for the top brands to sell well showed no sign of stopping as the next three highest selling lots were from Rolex, Cartier and Breitling. Lot 737 (a gentleman’s stainless steel Rolex) sold on estimate at £1000. Cartier’s classic Tank Watch proved its timeless appeal with lot 762 (a stainless steel lady’s example) selling at £900 and Breitling continued to sell well with lot 718 (a Breitling Colt chronometre) achieving a hammer price of £800.

Of the top ten lots in the sale, two were Rolex, two Cartier, three Omega and one Breitling. It seems that the top names, with their history of excellence, continue to attract the bids.

The watch sale goes from strength to strength so we hope to see you at the next The Watches Auction on December 16th. To consign to this, or any of our future watch auctions, please contact auction@mctears.co.uk or telephone 0141 810 2880.
