Excellent prices for fine Victorian and Edwardian furniture at McTear's

18/11/2015     Furniture & Works of Art

The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, held 17th November at 7pm, proved that, once again, the market for fine Victorian and Edwardian furniture continues to grow in strength.

As ever, rosewood and walnut furniture commands excellent prices at auction, with lot 952, an early Victorian rosewood dwarf bookcase achieving over four times its lower estimate to make £1500 hammer, selling to a delighted buyer in England. Similarly, a beautiful early 20th century French rosewood and Kingswood parquetry bombé bureau du dame, lot 881, after competition in the room and online, achieved an excellent £650 hammer – a princely sum for a petit yet exquisitely made piece of furniture. A fine Victorian walnut and marquetry side cabinet also proved popular at auction, exceeding its upper estimate to make £600 hammer and selling to a local buyer in the room. A Danish rosewood dining suite commanded much pre-sale auction interest, however, this table, chairs and sideboard was mid-20th century, also proving that more contemporary, Scandi-style furniture can also achieve good prices at auction.

Although excellent prices for furniture dominated the auction, collectables and works of art also sold well. Of particular note are two Art Deco figures modelled as females (lots 848 and 865), selling for £300 respectively. Cartier and Hermés were two prestigious names to feature in this particular auction, with lot 964, the Carier Les Must de Cartier red hide briefcase achieving £340 hammer and a fine Hermés silk scarf (lot 880) achieving £190 hammer.
The market for furniture and works of art continues to be buoyant. To consign to The Furniture & Works of Art Auction, taking place 15th December, please contact auction@mctears.co.uk or telephone 0141 810 2880.
